If I'm not wrong, you need to find a driving instructor to teach you how to drive first, then you need to take a driving test conducted by the LTA. If you pass the test, you get your licence.

must give hongbao if want to pass first time. But i was too poor last time so have to rely on myself.

It depends on whether you opt for driving lessons with a school or private instructor.
1) Go to a driving school, register yourself & apply for basic theory test = Set aside $30
- Buy a basic theory booklet, read it, go for test and pass. Like Angle said, you'll be given a PDL (provisional driving license) that allows you to go on the road for practical lessons.
2) Apply for advanced theory test = Set aside $30.
3) Book practical lessons = Set aside $80 for 1 lesson a week, means $360 for 4 lessons a month.
Most people require 25 - 30 lessons.
4) Apply for TP test = Set aside $150.

If you going for school, prepare $1500. If going for private will be cheaper.
Added: You have to take the Basic Theory Test (BTT) first. Upon passing it, you can apply for the Provisional Driving License (PDL) from Traffic Police (TP). Then with the PDL, you can start to learn driving on the road with a qualified instructor teaching you. Then in the mean time you have to take the Final Theory Test (FTT) and pass it to be able to book for the practical and final test date. Pass the final practical test, you'll get your driving license.

Not only PDL is valid for 6 months, but the FTT's results is also only valid for 6 months (or 12 months? I'm not too sure). Only BTT's results are permanent. So upon passing FTT, better to hurry up and get your license before the results expire.

I took 17 full lessons, excluding the 3 revision lessons and test drive before the actual test dates

I haven't got my license yet. My final pracitcal test is on 18th June. But I can roughly calculate. I'll spend about $1,700.
Private is cheaper but takes longer because priority for BTT, FTT and final TP test goes to school students. School is faster but more expensive.
One practical lesson at CDC during off-peak hours is $59.92. For private, it's roughly about $40.
If you don't mind paying more, go for school like CDC or BBDC or SSDC. They are more organised and structured, things are easier to follow.
But if cost is of concern, then it's private FTW.

if your looking to save some money, opt for private instructor for practical. probably cost me 1.1k or maybe less. took ard 11-14 lessons 2hours per lesson. u can take this into consideration if it helps =).

private would be much faster, i got my lic in less than 3 months after passing my FTT, total cost less than 1.5k

private is cheaper and faster
spent 1.2k to 1.3k and got license around 6 to 9 months later

Would Sorceror and vulpes macrotis mutica explain why learning from a private instructor would be faster?
Usually, its learning from a school that would provide a much faster option.
