Please don't swing here and there. Very giddy you know.Originally posted by january:did not i say before that the middle class is expected to not gain too much for policy because the focus of help is towards the poorer.
with this in mind, i think we should thus not oppose and find fault with policies.
just focus on how to be richer by learning saving techniques, self improvment and things i will be fine.
i myself is a little poor in terms of family and myself. we should trust our leaders.
let me pose a question. let say we vote off PAP, do you people think opposition can do better or will they turn into like the PAP u all are complaining yourself.
if you are saying that current minister is greedy, will they opposition be not greedy when they are in power?

[b]3rd paragraph - It's no longer as easy to define poor, middle-income and rich. The line now has blurred. 10 years ago, $2000 per month could make you a middle-class earner. Now, even considering that you are single, you could be struggling to make ends meet. It's slightly above what the lower-income earn, and that often cut them off help.[b]
Yes, you can classify it under defamation if it is proven to be false. But it is highly unlikely to be countered against since there is no way to ascertain for sure that it was not the case, but of course neither can we say that the government is guilty of being biased because there is no evidence.Originally posted by Gazelle:Now that we have a common understanding of the definition, can I say that by accusing the government of awarding Sentosa IR project to Genting Int because of political pressure from Malaysia is form of defamation because that will affect the credibility of our government and its system?

10 years ago, I see the same people earning the same amount.
10 years later, I still see the same people earning the same amount, without all these luxuries and struggling.
Do you understand poverty or how its measured?Originally posted by Gazelle:10 years ago, most Singaporeans dont own mobile phone, dont have broadband, dont watch cable TV, dont own Ipod or mp3 player, dont drink coffee at starbucks etc. Is the middle earner struggling to make ends meet or are they struggling because of their new lifestyle?
10 years ago becoming a millionaire was a major achievement...now earning that in a year is too much of a sacrifice, there's a special group of 'servants' who are whining about the low wages, must be at least $2mil...Originally posted by Gazelle:10 years ago, most Singaporeans dont own mobile phone, dont have broadband, dont watch cable TV, dont own Ipod or mp3 player, dont drink coffee at starbucks etc. Is the middle earner struggling to make ends meet or are they struggling because of their new lifestyle?
I am sure you have studied mean median mode in "O" levels. A rise in average could mean the top 10% wage are rising rising and pulling up the average while the general populations wage stays stagnant. Could please produce data for median please,Originally posted by Gazelle:c) Do you have reasons to believe that the statistic provided by MOM is distorted?

Before anyone accuse the government of doing something I think it is important that he or she is able to support his claim by facts and proof instead of creating all that cock and bull stories, or base on historical events or rumour.Originally posted by bigmouthjoe:Yes, you can classify it under defamation if it is proven to be false. In many, though not all, legal systems, statements presented as fact must be false to be defamatory.
Based on what's in the forum, many people would be sued for libel. Just like the words we used to describe others in times of flaming. Malicious or not, it is best left to the viewer's discretion.
Let me quote you an example of my friend:Originally posted by Gazelle:10 years ago, most Singaporeans dont own mobile phone, dont have broadband, dont watch cable TV, dont own Ipod or mp3 player, dont drink coffee at starbucks etc. Is the middle earner struggling to make ends meet or are they struggling because of their new lifestyle?
Those statistics are based on Singapore $ Per Employee.Originally posted by Gazelle:The above statement will be more meaningful if you could let us know
a) Who are these same people you are referring to?
b) Does this pool of people provide a good represtation of the overall Singapore job market?

You can and should refute his points based on what he is saying, however similarly you cannot refute his points because you have no prove that it did not happen. I am not aware of this discussion regarding the IR so I cannot comment further on this issue.Originally posted by Gazelle:Before anyone accuse the government of doing something I think it is important that he or she is able to support his claim by facts and proof instead of creating all that cock and bull stories, or base on historical events or rumour.
e.g. To support his claim about Sentosa IR, he has actually said that PM Badawi actually visited Singapore 2 months before or 2 months after the Sentosa IR annoucement (oct 2006) to pressure and thanks Singapore government respectively. Did PM Badawi flew into Singapore in a stealth plane and flew off without anybody knowing accept him?

It's a valid question and is vital to whether you can sustain your argument a not.Originally posted by Gazelle:You dont question someone with another question because that only shows that you are question that someone just for the sake of questioning.
"Could" is a speculative word that has no meaning unless you could provide facts to support it.

1) it will not encourage discussion
2) You know nuts about each individual
3) You are not the TS
Before we discuss this further, I think it will be important to have a common understanding of what is the definition of defamation.

What I don't like is the way only one view ('good') is allowed to get good press / coverage, while the "alternate" views ('bad') are downplayed/under-represented. Examples were aplenty in the last GE. The statistics are in the link, and done by the PAP government.
The lower 20% suffer constants drops, while highest 10% get increases. Facts endorsed by the Singapore Dept of Statistics...
