If she cannot afford to use computer to email you or something, ask her to write mail. I am sure that will be cheaper than long distance call.
If you are unable to give advice to her, then don't give advice to her. Sometimes out of desperation she will take your advice literally and apply it, WHICH may result in something both you and her do not wants.
Being a simple listening ear is already good enough for her to whine and complain for she needed to let steam off. If she wants some answers or comments. You can then tell her to give you some time to think about it and get help.
Just don't assume her relationship with her current boyfriend is on the rocks and you think you may have a chance to get back to her. Really, you may suffer anxiety over nothing concrete. Just relax and do the best you can: listen to her and comfort her with simple 'oks' and 'orhs'. That is good enough to assure her.

She's having trouble with her boss at work. Her grandmother passed away 3 months ago. She quarrels incessantly with her current boyfriend. Her family's been in financial instability for half a year. To top it all up her father is in the last terminal stage of stomach cancer(adenocarcinoma) with a month left.
She calls me every other day (long distance to Australia) to tell me all about how she feels. I really REALLY pity her but I can't think of really good advice/condolences to tell her. I feel really bad everytime she calls me and pours her heart to me only to get the occasional "orh", " ok" and "sorry" etc...how sia...
Everybody has problems including you & me. Your ex-GF will need to find her own solutions. The wealthy, the poor, the intelligent and not so intellgient - all have their own problems; that is part and parcel of living in this world.
Take good care of yourself by not allowing an ex-GF's problems to affect your studies, work and personal happiness.

She took my heart and she took my money...she must have slipped me a sleeping pill. Nah I don't think she's that kind of person although betrayal was the theme of our break(not me). I don't see us getting back together again no matter what. Yeah I guess the righteous thing I can really do now would be to listen to her.
Come to think of it the phone calls didn't go away so I guess that reassures that I'm not doing anything wrong. Any inadequecy would just be my morals chewing my ass to bits.
It's the hols down under here so there's no worry about studies or personal life. It's just wake up ---> WoW ----> work ---->sleep ----> rinse and repeat. Boring days come to think about it, this ex-girlfriend thing has really gave me something else to do.

Just lend her a listening ear will do. Some people only need someone who would listen to their problems to reduce their stress.
You are in australia and not her bf anymore. So, all you need to do is show concern like you would to your best friends.
Ask her not to think too much. People come and go all the time.
Ask her to put up with the job untill her financial status stablized. She can keep a look out for other good offers but advise her not to switch during the period unless she is 100% sure that she would fit in the new job.
As for her relationship wise. Just lent a listening ear. Do not advise much or you might end up being blamed for asking her to endure or break. -

Phonecards can help reduce overseas call price. The right one can allow you to call for about 4 hours for just 10 dollars. So i guess it's alright. Maybe I was exaggerating about the TV part. Come to think of it, I must have compared it to my household that can afford three plasma TV.
