Geez fellas... Most ladies wear it because they have more of a VPL concern than us guys. VPL is Visible Panty Line for y'all who didn't know. It's known for some (or many) women to be less confident if they had VPL thanks to normal knickers than the one formed by a thong or g-string, which is visibly less.
With regards to hygiene, there hasn't really been much studies on it because there haven't been many reported cases. However, there may have been cases with regards to thoong abrasion (ouch to the max, mate...).

a thong or g-string is either to make one more comfy, remove VPL, make one feel more sexy. they are designed for both men and women so as to cater to their needs to protect wateva genital organs they have. those lingerie do not indicate if u are gay or not. they come in different material and designs as the demand for them increases. they can come in the form of cotton, silk or even polyester. and the designs are mainly the normal sizes like any other undergarments but they are also low hip and high waist for different garments. and the thickness of the 'in between thingy in ur a55' of coz comes in a variety to cater to each needs. some prefer thicker to feel more secure at least it wun break when u exert force on ur pelvic right? some comes in clip form like the one i have... will break open when i go for dance but will not when i play pool. and when it feels uncomfortable in ur a55 crack means u had not worn them properly or bought the wrong one for ur body size, othe than tt the garment should make u feel very comfortable as like its not there at all.. its more hygienic for ppl who dun like to wear undies. i wear g-strings and thongs everyday and i do not haf the those normal big undies. even if its the 'week of the month', there is such thing as tampons... but if u feel uncomfortable get those softer material undies and not those 3 for $10 den VPL will not be so serious. ehhh i seem to be writing a compo on undies... sorry tok to much lio...
