New ERP Gantries @ ORchard Road

The thing is, so far, there hasn't seem to be any public outcry from people about the weekend jams. And even if they do, it's simple. Park your car somewhere else and walk over into town, either that or go somewhere else. We already know that getting into a jam in Orchard during a weekend is just part and parcel of being in town. We either have to live with it or find ourselves an alternative.
If the government keeps using excuses like this to increase their funding, people are going to keep getting unhappier, and more people are going to leave their "homeland". Our leaders won't have much reason to think we're deserting our country anymore. Taking the public transport isn't going to help either. The buses are packed like as if they are sending the Jews to Auswitz (again), and so are the trains. Bus lanes aren't much of a use too because the last (many) times I checked, they got stuck in the jam too. Trains are packed as well, and if the situation continues like this, SMRT will probably say they need to run their trains more frequently and there'll be another reason for yet another price hike. Same goes for SBS. The situation is going to get worse if they try to "solve" it this way. -
siao lah, bus fare increase here mrt fare increase there. now cars also need to pay for more erp gantries.. tourists who wanna take bus or mrt see so packed also sian already. making singapore an expensive stopover to shop before going to another destination. hope those future young mps dont screw singapore up.

Ya right! To ease the traffic flow is an excuse! It's the money. We all know that. Don't be surprise one day when you wake up from your bed, you see a big gantry outside your window. It will happen. In Singapore, our life is pretty much guided (like I've mentioned before). A year or so ago, the government wants to make car much more affordable, hence COE is lowered. And now, they say roads are too congested! Why was COE implemented in the first place? To stop the oh-so-average or the poor from buying cars as not to further congest the roads? Ok, COE was implemented because the government says "Need to control, too many cars will congest the roads!". And what happened a year or so ago (and still are going on)? They said "Oh, we want to make cars more affordable". And what happened now? Too many cars! More gantries, more gantries!
And guess what! Do you seriously think the gantries will help ease the traffic jam (when most of the time especially in the afternoon there's still heavy traffic on the CTE to the city)? No! Why? Because we've got no choice already. We'd probably set up business in the city and bought the car when the COE was low and before the grantries was errected! Will COE really help cut down on people buying cars? Again no. If it would, why are still so many cars?
And the cigarettes price hike issues. How many of you smoke? Hardcore smokers (more than 5 years or so) would not likely to quit, no matter how expensive the ciggies will be. Ok, maybe I am exaggerating. They would probably travel up north to buy/smuggle when the prices here becomes unreasonable! What does this lead to? More traffic jams at the causeway. Then what? Granties? Another problem. Smuggling cases will rise too.
Oh, so they increased the ciggie prices so as to discourage the youth from picking up the habit? Why didn't they think of that 20 or 30 or even since indepence? If smoking is so bad and harmful, why can't the government ban smoking just like they've banned chewing gums? They can't right? Why? Some sort of revenue to the country?
Sorry for being so long winded - all I want to put across is, it's the money!

What actually went wrong that caused the congestion?
- Is it that your policy for COE went wrong? (COE quota messed up?)
- Are the roads not able to handle the amount of traffic? (road building LTA messed up?)
Why are we having congested roads after sooo many kinds of "controls"?
Somebody must've messed up! Who? -
They might as frigging well put gantries outside every carpark entrance in every HDB estate!
Or a device that deducts an amount the moment we start our engine! -
It is a case of affordable purchase of cars but expensive maintenance.. It's something like the lowering of income tax and the increase in GST.. IMHO i don't think the newly added gantries will help ease traffic in the near future.. Car owners will just drive through as per normal.. Pay and then forget about it.. If such a situation happened overseas, some organisation will probably start striking about it.. Well, in Singapore, we are probably all passive citizens(dare not kp to the authorities) and that is why the government is taking advantage of it?

The worst is that if enter from other CBD zone, enter Orchard thru YMCA have to pay another time...

Got other ways to divert away from Orchard to reach your destination also wad...
In that case, why not promote the other ways of getting to your destinations? U know, like letting drivers know that other than gg through Orchard, the other ways to get to your destination, e.g. east to west, north to south. -

what other choices do peopple have if they just happen to be working at the CBD/Orchard? Park outside town and take train meh?

They say Serangoon Rd and Upp Serangoon Rd can be alt for CTE, but then, you see... They will make green light at Whompoa Nth shortly, now it needs 4 tries to get past the junction, next time it may need 6 -

Beside the 2 additional gantries at Orchard Rd, take note that from 1 Oct 2005, when you drive from Clemenceau Ave (from Orchard) into River Valley Rd (towards Clarke Quay), you will be charged again. Now no charge. -
In my opinion, ERP is too low. CTE always jam, orchard road evening jam, too many cars in sg liao! They should increase ERP until there is no jam. I'm sick of so many cars on sg roads. Please INCREASE ERP until $10!
