I would say both also cannot make it.
Ajisen actually not bad, but I prefer Kyo-nishi near China Square, I go there for lunch sometimes. The soup is super thick and delicious. One of the best ramen in SG. Very good ramen also is next to Centerpoint, got this little Jap store run by a Japanese chef. That one soup super good. It's near the food court. Forgot name of place.
Sushi, Sakae completely cannot make it. Genki certain places not bad, but overall standard drop also. Sushu Tei is good stuff, considering your pocket won't hurt too much. -

They probably go proper Japanese restaurants LOL. If you notice, you seldom see Japanese people eating at chain restaurants like these .

i had sushi buffet two days ago at SAKAE. had enough of SAKAE at the moment, ill take Ajisen

ajisen ramen's new crayfish ramen the soup is not nice imo.. they put chilicrab sauce on top of the crayfish n the soup tastes wierd. the tontoro ramen soup taste is nicer imo.
suki sushi buffet is better than sakae sushi buffet imo because suki sushi's includes all the $4.90 items not only the $1.80 sushis. meaning theres unlimited oysters and scallops /gratinated, salmon karma, etc. -

Currently in SG i think only Sakae is offering pure jap buffet. ( which means exclude hotels and international buffet outlets.)
Wide variety of jap food and certain outlets have tepanyaki in the restaurant too ( EG parkway Branch )
Its worth the money for the buffet.
as for ajisen.............after reading the previous posts other forum mates have written, i dun think i need to say more.
But my personal fav if i'm on a budget and i still wana eat jap, i'll go to Ichiban-Boshi or Ichiban-Sushi outlets. This outlets are from the fiesta sushi group. Their a-la-carte is not very expensive and their sashimi are fresh and well cut, not too thin not too thick. Price range there for a bento is ard $15-$22.
Another good outlet would be Hisatomo. this is another good place to dine at but the price here is slightly more to the high end cost. Typical jap food nth special but sashimi are fresh too.
If u guys really have good money to spend and wont cry after spending a few hundreds on jap food, i would recommend the 1 at Lido cinema there. its on the 7th floor if i nvr remember wrongly. have to go by the lift from mac there 1.
Cant really compare the food here with the rest that i have mentioned. After eating at this restaurant u will notice the difference between fine dining jap food and chain outlets jap food. -
Sakae is fine with me but I would rather chew rubber bands then take Ajisen's ramen. Somewhere in Clarke Quay (quite a long walk from Clarke Quay MRT station) there is this restaurant known as Ichiban Tei, its ramen is much better in quality and quantity.
For pure japanese buffet, Tsubaki at Novena has quite a decent variety of japanese cusine ranging from sushi, tempura, sashimi an estimate of 40+ dishes to choose from for $32 per head.
