uhh.. that being said, i can still find chye png at $2 for rice, 1 fried chicken wing (good, big and delicious), 1 egg and 1 veggie...
and kopi-o for 60¢ a cup...
it's at a market at North Bridge Road... that being said, it's rent-controlled... which shows why the cost of the kopitiam food is going up...
it points directly to the landlords and the extorti.. uuhh.. rent they charge the stalls
Roti prata used to be a cheap nice form of meal when hanging out for chit chats. No longer the case now.
Some of the food i get at hawker centres are served minute servings of meat. The feeling's not good, like a rip-off.
i always eat and cook at home
no msg, no salt, no sugar
all i add is some spices, but they are rising like hell!!!!
i think there should be more regulations regarding land zoning and rental cost.
depending on industry, you can't expect everyone to earn a equal amount of money every month.
e.g. an eatery would earn far less than let say, a mechanic workshop, a law firm, a clinic etc.
an eatery is more labour intensive, where the owner only earns a few cents for every plate of dish he sells. compare this to a lawyer where he makes hundreds of dollar every hour simply doing paperwork.
even though both might be located in a prime location, it does not justify the need to raise the eatery's rent to be on par with that of a law firm.
and shopkeepers requires location with high traffic flow, in prime locations. thus, it is not by their choice to choose atas locations to do business.
i.e. would you frequent a shop located inside kaki bukit industrial park, where the rent is cheaper compared to malls etc?
it is very unfair to penalise low-earning industries with high rental, which effectively drives up cost of living, since some of these industries are "necessities". i.e. without your eatery, where would you have lunch if your working far away from home?
can you imagine working in a CBD where there are no foodcourts, eateries, etc? you would end up starving everyday at work.

ppl over there is controlled price regime.. over here is open market.
else how come tell me why KL has problems building MRT using public funds? All the $$ spent on all these subsidies.
Tat also explains how come there's palm oil shortage in M'sia
Subsidy... I hit e set quota output, I'd rather sell e palm oil at market prices to Singapore, China or elsewhere than selling at a loss to my own ppl
I see.....that's interesting :)

it has already happened long ago.... examples like SIM, SMU and schools that opened after 2005.
Some newer secondary schools already have food selling $2 and above... and their portion is like 1/3 less than the food u eat outside (hawker centre/food court).. which makes it about close to $3.
Sooner or later everyone will be buying mass produced quick serve food from 7-11 if rents go up.
Eating in the streets would be a normal sight. That is if the situation gets out of hand. Which would most probably will knowing how greedy the current people above are.
the common excuse is high rental.
so whose fault is it?
who is the biggest land owner?
this should stop. the cost of living is scary.
Just who goes bid high high for every piece of land tat's on sale by tender?

property developers..... such as capitaland... far east.. etc..
capitaland is owned by temasek. They are one of the culprits of high rental as they own a big percentage of land in sg.
uhh.. if you guys kpkb about the prices, then brown-bag your lunches..
actually, the talking bus is right.. the prices of the commodities have gone through the roof...
it is made worse by the extortion level of rent caused by the kiasu idiot developers who bid unreasonably high bids for parcels of land..
this in turn causes them to try to recoup their expenditure by charging astronomical rents to the stalls... who then pass the costs to you.. the consumers..
to break out of the cycle, just go to the supermarket, buy some produce, make your own lunches...

you think supermarkets dun need land, or dun need to pay rent har?
this issue of high rental affects every business.
it is a joke to think that hawker centers and wet markets are originally created to centralise all the small-time business, and to prevent illegal hawking.
but now, other than a small group of people who pay cheap rents to NEA, most are paying $2-4K/mnth for a tiny shop space to private landlords.
for dry market, its worse. i found out from a butcher that he has to pay $5k rent every month just for his tiny counter within the shop. he has to share it with the groccer, fruit seller, poultry seller and the fishmonger, and each have to pay 5k.
thats over 20k monthly for a regular shop.

raw produce is cheaper than ready made meals..
else the stalls cannot make money enough to pay the rent, much less make a living..
so go do your bit to save some money and support the butcher and all that.. make your own meals
in the past it was centralisation to prevent illegal hawking which hygiene cannot be guaranteed.. but as always, these things are forgotten.. the gabrament has forgotten and have taken these principles for granted...
time to take them back
haha 5k for rental of butcher stall.....
