Im rather dissapointed at the share price though...I pick some up at 89 cents early this year...and the current price is at 91.5 cents...very dissapointing, but at least that 5 cents a share dividend should be able to help me cover my transport cost for the next quarter -

I'm training for long distance running. Hopefully my stamina can build until I need not depend on public transport so much. My legs would be the best transport vehicle. Save money and at the same time maintain health and figure.
Screw SMRT and government. Just wait til my stamina and legs get super strong, I'm not gonna take public transport anymore. No car for me (damn the COE).

The very rich stays in orchard and city area where they don't need to pay any ERP to travel to the CBD (they are already in it!)
The rest of the Singaporeans, esp the HDB dwellers are moved further and further away from orchard and CBD area. That means taking and paying more for buses and MRT. Even if you have a car, you still need to pay ERP charges to enter the city.

everyday my bus fare from home to camp and back, can easily cost 4 bucks... thats like one plate of chicken rice add rice and a drink lor cb.
seriously lah the gov always says the cost of living is going up, knn who is the one who is making it like this? when i was pri 5 it cost only 35 cents to take a bus. now it costs almost a dollar, to the same place im going.
protest also no use, thanks to the smart police, making any sort of peaceful protest into an illegal gathering.
but knn, something must be done to wake up the bloody MIW. bloody hell can spend a few million for some stupid club at the esplanade, while charity organisations have to use some stupid celebs making a fool for themselves on tv for donations.
and anyway, why dont the sponsors just donate all the cash prizes, condos, cars and shit to the organisations DIRECTLY and abolish the goddamn charity shows? OH yah i forgot, if this happens Singtel tan bo ji ki lan liao.

The Profit and loss statement:
Strictly speaking although on paper, SMRT made an increase of 41% of net profit after taxation in the Financial Year 2005, compared to 2004, most of the 41% doesn't come from normal operation. It came as the tax provision from the preious years were written back to the P&L this year. Why did SMRT write back the provision, I don't know. Maybe its some statutory requirement. I would have expected SMRT not to write back so as to have a poorer net profit to justify for a fare increase. Maybe it is the adoption of a new accounting standard that forced SMRT to write back the provision.
The adoption of a new acc standard did forced SMRT to write off more on the Amortisation and impairment losses of goodwill part. This distorted the eventual net profit figure. Another point to note is "should this amortisation figure" be listed under operation expenses when it is a significant change in interpretation as depicted by an early adoption of a new acc standard?
To make the P&L fairer for interpretation and more transparent, SMRT should adjust the 2004FY figures to reflect how it would have looked like if the new acc standard was adopted back then.

Do your part, DON'T donate to NKF - then you don't donate to the local telcos. If those prize winners are really charitable by heart, they should sell the prize and donate all the money back. But I don't think winners did. That last year grand prize winner was even "so lucky" that she won another $1000 again this year! Actually the profit didn't reall drop that much. Its all thanks to the Income tax credit.
I didn't follow much on the SMRT news about retrenchment over the year. But if the retrenchments were true, then why didn't the "Staff and related cost" decrease significantly in 2005 compared to 2004? New accounting standards? Wonder where did all the savings from staff retrenchment go to? hmm.... -

I think the increase in fare prices can be justified if SMRT says it is in the interest of its shareholders and the company's competency
