Those are the main tricks they use.....good acting and good script. Their purpose is to confuse as much as possible....and instill pity and sense of urgency. The thing is.....we'll never know. But if it didn't make you poorer....and if it did make your conscience clearer.....then its OK lor.

I've had several encounters of people coming up to me before, asking for money. They ask from as low as $1 to as high as $10.
I just walk away from them. I don't mind giving a genuinely poor man some spare change, but I absolutely refuse to give a conman even a one cent coin. Why should I? The conman's worth is much less than S$0.01. If you have a well-functioning body with an honest heart, then you should be working for your money, not begging for it.
I only feel sad that by turning all those people who ask me for money, I may have inadvertently turned down a few genuine cases as well. It's not because I'm heartless enough to refuse to help them, but the presence of conmen only undermines the worth of charity.
Damn you, conmen. -
In Singapore, I try to only give to those beggars (eg. at hawker centres) who are handicapped or aged. Actually, these are not really beggars....they sell stuff (most common of which is tissue paper). My car is full of tissue now because I keep buying them even when I don't need them. OK, but tissues in the car are useful sometimes on Friday and Saturday nights
I, too, may have unknowingly turned away a few cases of healthy beggars, who may be in genuine financial help because they can't find jobs, etc.
There have also been cases I've seen where the people asking for money are not only healthy (not handicapped), but have even bigger waistlines than mine!!! No money how can eat until so fat???

used to loiter in bugis area, quite fat..a bit of black pigment on her face..rather young seems like early 20's.. a dull look on her face..would approach people at the bus stop to ask for money..dun give..she will scold them..

She claimed that she was from JB, here on work permit....with a mother and bother living with her...and that she's lost her job. I knew she was lying because she spoke with a typical Singaporean Mandarin accent....and work permit holders aren't allowed to bring their families here. Besides, once you lose your job, you have to leave the country.
Anyway, she asked for S$8 to buy dinner for her family. out of pity (and since I took up so much of her time listening)....I offer her some coins from my pocket, which she took. I told her that I wasn't willing to give anymore than that. Then she said "wah, so little, how to buy dinner?". I snapped back "not enough then give me back lor". She quickly said "thank you" and walked away.
Throughout the whole incident, she was very friendly and polite. Or maybe that was in her beginning stages of this 'job' when she was still a little frightened. -

this guy....30s-40s ba...that time i sec 4...then he always loiter around batok area.
that day, i was walking home. then while passing the bus stop, he suddenly stopped me to ask if i have money. he say dunno what la. dunno what shit he talking. but he kept stressing that his wife is at the hospital waiting for him...then he forgot to bring money out so cannot take bus. so he asked if i have $2 coins. then i took out my wallet. my wallet that time was those clear...can see-through de. then i dun have coins for him ar. that time i tot i can sneak off like that. hahaha! BUT!!!! he saw my $2 notes and asked for all of them! about $8 in total i think. then i was like, "huh!!! why take bus need so much money! kns!" then he say what, "easier to change to coins with notes like that." again, i dunno what bullshit he talking. but in the end, i still gave him leh coz i scared maybe his wife really in hospital or what ar. then he say what, he will return me the money tml. go and die la bullshit.
i dun understand why i so stupid leh....
then, a few days later, my friend was complaining to everyone about an incident same to mine!!!!! he gave that stupid man $10!

Lol... Had some incidents like that before as well... At bukit merah area... I was blasting music when a guy approached me... I thought he was just asking for directions... So I took out my earphones and asked what he want. He said he needed some money and without even listening to what he wants to continue saying, I just put back my earphones and walked off

at least the beggars here are quite gentle..ever witnessed one in JB before some years back..i was in JB at Jln Sentosa i think is Tebrau hawker centre..eating dinner, then this indian man came quite young going around begging..he went to one table and beg for money , the family there gave him a few coins..u won't believe this..he actually threw back at them..wow..wat a sight! he came to my table,i told my friends just ignore him...we heck care him & he just walked away..

When using ATMs, be aware of who is around you too....
I know a person who was approached by some Chinese nationals immediately after he withdrew money from an ATM in town. The Chinese nationals asked claimed that they had no money for lunch and asked my friend if he had money.
At that time, my friend was still in the process of putting the money he withdrew into his wallet....but he said "no". -
the story they use are so similar...relatives sick, need money to take taxi...

so far i seldom meet ppl begging for money except for one man who went house-to-house. we told him we have no money & ignored him. -
ahh had a friend who kana conned from a chinese national to take cab. he gave the guy 60 bucks. :lol we hear liao, he became laughing stock of the eternity.
i gave a chinese national around 15+ bucks before, she says she needed to call home in china, it was before midnight, i told her get it from the shop dat sells international call card. she asks for my num or something so she can return me, i say no need and left. fake or not, i dunnoe, but better den scarly real plea for help jiu chang le.
but the 60 bucks for taxi is crap. -

there was once i was sending my gf home. we were waiting for bus, then a man came up and asked us for $$ to take bus and mrt home.. he wanna go to bukit batok.. so i told the guy i can only give him $1 to take bus to mrt station. then seek help from the ppl @ mrt station.. i think in the end he didnt take the bus.. he just kept walking and asking ppl for $$ to take bus and mrt home..
when my mum came home, i asked her did she meet a man asking for $$ to take bus/mrt home.. she said yes.. luckily my mum didnt give me.. i wasted $1.. should have kept that $1 and buy toto.. -
in the end i think he collected a bundle and took helicopter home.

i was listening to my music, then the man asked me something which i off my music to listen... thought asking for directions or something. he then started on his story of how he came from china, and lost all money, cant find job, etc etc etc. i asked him to get to his point and he ask me to give him some money, like $20.
Stared at him and whip out handphone. Told him i've got no money, he just walked away. i walked away too and later when i turned ard to observe them, the woman is stopping a man on motorcycle to speak to him. ?!?
i seldom give money to beggers. old ppl who ask i will consider, and i definately help those old ah ma who are selling tissues. but all the rest i dont give. for all i know, they might be earning $30/hr. just by asking for money leh. i'm earning less than $8/hr leh. how to justify giving them money when they are richer? -
