Singaporeans are not gullible - well, not all are, and not a majority are. But what I believe is more apparent is the lack of freedom of expression and freedom to speak without fear.
We have no choice but to follow and obey. -

Perhaps the biggest problems in our local education is not the lack of knowledge... its the poor grasp of the english language... They should put more emphasis on comprehension... -

You see someone in need. Do you just walk away? Or are you one of those morons that stand around waiting for the poor soul to utter 4 digits? The basic fabric of human nature is a thing called compassion. If you are a religious person, SHAME ON YOU. I'm not. And I don't need religion to tell me that the able bodied have a responsibility to help the less fortunate. Whether by circumstance or by fate, these people were dealt a bad hand and people like you and me, who have a little more luck, have this responsibility to do so.
Let me ask you something. Where do you think social welfare came from? It came from human beings with a soul. People with a conscience. Why did the government step in? Because they are in a better position to facilitate and spread the help where it is needed. The government's high vantage point allows it to efficiently distribute and regulate resources that are channelled to such organizations. If it was left to people like you, I shudder to think of the consequences.
That being said, being in a better position does not TRANSFER RESPONSIBILITY. People have got the whole notion and concept of a government wrong. The government isn't some maid or servant you pay off (with taxes) to do your dirty work. Now I know i'm inviting responses from many who will hammer me for that statement. I'm not saying our government is doing a fantastic job at potraying that image. I'm saying that social welfare SHOULD NOT be the full responsibility of the government. The government has the responsibility to EFFICIENTLY channel the nation's pooled resources into needy organizations. Where does this pool of resources come from? Us!
Oh please don't tell me that "since the government blahblahblah they should devote their time and work in old folks home since blahblahblah you said that money is the lowest form of charity." If you even have the nerve to think that way, take a deep breath and walk away from the computer. Don't argue for argument's sake against me. Open your narrow little mind a little more and you will see the light.

How true.. Whenever I went to the states, I was shock to see so many old folks strolling in the park. Don't they need to work? Or rather, are they consider useless and not wanted by their society?
In singapore, elderly have many job opportunities :
1. As a cleaner in kopitiam or food court.
2. Self employment as a taxi driver.
3. As a dish washer.
We should be thankful that in Singapore even old folks can find jobs.
In America, old folks are jobless and sitting around doing nothing. It is obvious the American government is unable to solve the structural unemployment problem and are unable to redesign jobs for older workers. These old folks in America must be suffering without an income and spending so much time in the park when they should be working. -

i am not listening to what press said or what big shot out there said
kindness is a merit , i can be practised by one ability,we shouldnt be so unkind because of big shot said what or what not .
anyway my $ not his/her , my kindness have nothing to do with his/her
but the strength of many individual indeed help tang na
i believe we shouldnt let those ugly issue affect our basic nature of kindness
give to ur best of ability , and always be smart to do your own expense calculations

Most of Singaporeans get 5% of Durai's pay, so we are of lesser standings than monkeys.
Because of lesser standing than monkey, it programs our minds to aim for higher standings and thus improvement in our lives and nation. We eagerly work hard; 12 hours a day at work is like a hobby to us. We simply love working and because we are humble we do not mind the 5% of peanut pay we get monthly. We know that if we work 12 hrs or more a day, singapore will be a better place tomorrow. -

You spent 2 years of serving NS despite knowing that fresh graduated males of foreign nationalities who do not need to serve NS, can easy get employment passes and compete with you for jobs. Better still, you also know that they pay a similar amount of tax as you, is younger than you by 2 years and get the same starting pay as you! You humbly and graciously did not ask for more pay despite having 2 years of NS experience!
Only the most humble males of this Earth will be so noble to accept such treatments.

There is a response from Dr Lee Wei Ling in today's papers to a letter written in response to her statements.
I read the response by our average singaporeans to her outburst. However, i have not managed to read what Dr Lee said in response to those replies.
As always, whether the original letters were censured or edited in some way, the response from the public appeared nothing but subdued and benign, perhaps heavily censored for fear of reprisals.
In fact, the letters were absolutely gentle and spoke of Singaporean's compassion towards the needy and poor seeking medical aid. There was zero criticism of the person who started this ruckus (or pehaps censored out completely by our beloved ST).
I can imagine her response to be : 'oh i was mis-quoted....that's not what i meant"...
anyone read it to confirm or refute the above?
