I beg to differ that R&D will be done in China....Originally posted by AF2005:"THe rest" are shrinking evry half year, as thailand and china progress and add value.
In china, there are many funded startups, going into 1 inch and 2.5 inch hdd design and manufacturing in small scale with as many failing. Each time they produce more ambitious designers and daring entrepreneurs and leaders that take challengers head on at a fraction of a cost. These people will eventually lead R&D in china.
In china , entrepreners can have many failures and still get lots of chances for retry. In singapore, one time fail, evryone, bank and gov look down.
Eventually china may be R&D centre for HDD and many high tech industry.
Thats why small groups are funding many high tech and software start up in china, india and thailand, and avoiding singapore.
Taxi drivers, bus drivers , food court helpers and stall assistants. In manufacturing, only 20% of the workforce have tertiery eductaion, while the rest primary six to O levels.Originally posted by dragg:i wonder where all these manufacturing people end up after retrenchment.
You could be wrong.....Originally posted by AF2005:Taxi drivers, bus drivers , food court helpers and stall assistants. In manufacturing, only 20% of the workforce have tertiery eductaion, while the rest primary six to O levels.
Some say its good for the long run as it frees up more singapore workers for the other sectors , provided they accept jobs changes and pay cut. A HDD factory operator actually makes nearly or less than NTUC or cold storage girls.
do you think they even allow real R&D here? Most of the Real R&D are done else where and transfer here for new product build and improvement and production and process works as in so called POST R&D and pre manufacturing.Originally posted by dcx:I beg to differ that R&D will be done in China....
No way U.S will allow R&D to be carried out in China...
If that's the case in the future, think i'll be cutting grass liaoz..Originally posted by AF2005:do you think they even allow real R&D here? Once the launch, still under R&D scope, is stable they will go to volume production to all plants in the regions and let each local plant compete to add value. Same concept for handphones, hdd, PCs, ipods, etc.
The reasons they say R&D centre is to qualify for R&D grants here. it can be as large as $15 million. Many companies and employees have benefitted from the money. ONce it is not renewable, the whole R&D close shop.
The only real R&D here is the data storage institute whom have generated alot of PRC PHDs, funded by GOV. These prc phds will be the pioneers for their homeland once they return if package is good.
They will still do the same "not real" R&D in china or even in thailand whom can be easily transfer once they have mature to the next stage.
Thailand have been in hdd industry for as long as singapore 20 years ago. Mnaufacturing heads and components and hdds.

oh...that's when u exclude the overtiems claims....what i meant was with overtime claims, operators could hit as high as nearly to 3k.Originally posted by AF2005:
A cold storage girl can make close to $1000 a mnth. HDD operator/assembly is lucky if she can get basic $800 excluding OT, night shift allowances and benefits.
Motorola, chartered, statspac, apple and others pay operators different depending on their skill requirements. They all range from basic $800 to $1100.
If they are under subcon even lower as benefits will be lost out and uncertain of jobs in slow time.

Only for HDD and a few other companies, There are lot of sensitive information, software and knowledge protection the company must protect to survive. There are many cases of industry espionage and sack internally.Originally posted by dcx:If that's the case in the future, think i'll be cutting grass liaoz..

What do they do after retrenched? I think they have to prepare to be trained as a poker assistant in the coming casinos.
Maxtor/Seagate like HP/IBM made annoucement on retrenchment because it's one-off in accounting or in their financial reports.
like rich dad poor dad mentioned, when big job cut announced, investor will be happy (less cost) and normal average workers will be sad. (no job)
