Normal is -2 speakers,speakers wire,inter-connects(rca cable), 1 intergrated amp or AV-amp, 1 dvd-player.
Better is - 2 speaker(book-shelf or studio), better rca cable(cable-talk/monster-cable/stright-wire)brand, amp u see wat u want, mayb in time to come u can add speakers & woofer to it to make into home cenima.if only wan for song, get intergrated amp.CD-player(not vcd/dvd player)
The even better are pre-power amp,die die hv to cd-player, then hv to add in phone stage amp, speakers tat's rated at bout 80+db.Even better cables.Gd will be getting in Mosfet powered.
Those higher ends(sound quality) than pre & power amps are those tube-amp(got few light bulb on it wid jus 1 or 2 switch)cos they are more of transistor amp.not so much circuitry board.
Speakers is also an issue, diff speakers are able to produce diff frequency of sound from its voice-coil.The power tolorance of the speaker is also an issue.
Its all set by ur budget.There are CD-players tat cost over $1000.Some bloody speaker wire tat look like water pipe thick.Some rca tat is bout washing machine water outlet size thick.

If you try your luck, maybe you can get some second hand McIntosh. Of course I favour this brand for a very long time.
If not B&W is good....although the ones i tried were the 800 series. Maybe off your budget.
I tried Bose 901. If you don't blast it, it sounds ok. But if you play it too loud, the sound becomes very hard and distorted. The sound reflecting technology is its unique points, so when you close your eyes you will have an image of a full band playing in front of you rather than from two speakers.
Another worth trying is the Tannoy range of speakers. Unique in the sense that the twitter is within the subwoofer itself. So you wun have the image distortion. -

Hey, if you really spend too much on a system,
i think u will regret after a while.
Spend on good speakers and amp.
They last for over 5-10+ years.
Denon Amp separates are good too.
CD/SACD players cannot last long.
Besides its now about ipods, mp3s, internet radio, DAB, and networking.
CD player is obsolete.
Note those amps/preamps with room correction feature.
With such feature, it can make lousy speakers sound good
and reduce room damping/effect/reverberation effects. -

i think speakers can be average becsue i'm looking for a good headset as well.
My girlfriend always asks me to turn off the music.. so, i think most of the time, i will listen with headset on. -

You can consider changing to larger speakers if you want.
I have F-series Denon myself (10yr old alreadi)
but use other brand speakers.
B&W midrange abit lacking if you are into vocals.
Theres one US speaker brand called Avante,
not sure if u can find here.
Denon S-101,301 has ipod connection. Useful if you have ipod.
However, note that the home audio/video landscape is changing fast now.
so dun invest too much other than speakers. -

Among the more commercial brands, i have to say
Sony and Jvc hifi sets are among the better ones.
Sony has one model with SACD/DVD + S-Masters Digital Amp.
The sony shop in simlim has this.
Nice design and only ard $700.
JVC wood cone speakers seemed impressive.
But for even better qualities, Denon + B&W. -

Bose got so many series..not all of their series is lousy mah..their 701s & 901s sound is also quite good wat....& their lifestyle seires got the dunno wat decoder to make normal VHS play out to sound lik THX wor...
Although they may not really live up to the standert of Sonus Faber range, but its relatively cheaper to get them as a set mah...
Normal set few hundred get 2 small sat spk, 1 basebin, then up level bout $1k+ can get the one wid the cd/radio receiver liao...
1 pair souns faber higher range spk how much liao.. hai-yo...

Those who recommend 800 series are crazy.
Denon F-series amp is 70W per channel right? (more than enough)
Maybe the 35W speakers are not sufficient for low-frequencies
when you turn on the volume.
But shoud be good enough for a HDB size room.
Betw, this is the sony s-masters im talking about, CMT-WS2D:
with digtial amp (75W per channel) and DVD/SACD somemore.
but no HDCD i think and only around $699.
My suggestions to u
1) Denon F-series or D-series + optional other brand speakers
2) Sony CMT-WS2D + optional other brand speakers
3) audiophile separates : integrated amp + CD player+ tuner + speakers
Infact any audiophile brand speakes are damn good
compared to those commercial/consumer brand bundled speakers.
Even those entry levels ones around $100 to 300.

A point to note is: the most important components in a audio system
are, in the order:
1) speakers
2) amp
3) source : CD, tuner, etc
With good speakers, even with avg 20W amp, it still sound good
(except slightly weak bass when u turn on the volume).
compared with lousy speakers and good amp.
Amp wise, digital amp are good, but still abit rare relatively.
Eg sony S-masters, T-amp and others.
low-power and high-quality and low cost
Its the next evolution step for audio amps.
Another thing is, note overpriced parts.
In the audiophile world, those high-end components
are really overpriced for the quality they deliver.
Many are small companies wo much engineering expectise.
Only add nice external design/cabinets.
Infact, $1K-2K can buy you damn good systems already. -

For compressed audio, can use higher rate compression
or even lossless compression (wma and aac got)
Say u use 300+kbps MP3 (or even AAC) and a CD,
95-99 percent people cannot tell the difference,
for 95-99 percent of the music)
Add to that fan, aircon and traffic noise...hmm..
Its all in the mind.
Infact when u use your PC to rip a CD,
the raw info is already better than CD players pickup mechanism.

however, Denon D-F101 has only:

so, does it mean that Sony one is better than Denon. ( I think the D-F101 is aroud SGD1,500 compared to Sony SGD699) -
