Is spending on Defence a waste of money?

Defence is a multiplayer game just like any other mmorpg, once some guy starts the game all must play...dun play the game then get ready to be pwnzed by the rest in the game of politics lor...

Just remember the 1st Gulf War? Kuwait got occupied by Iraq as Kuwait was viewed to be a walkover without a strong deterrent of the Armed Forces... Surely you won't want that to happen to Singapore... Me won't cos this is my country and my home where all my loved ones are...

frankly i have a feeling that the kind of weapons we buy are mostly to elevate our status. nothing to do with the real defence.
I believe the most powerful weapon our country can have, are the Social Skills that our leaders possess. -

Army is like Condom - you don't want to end up in a situation when you need it and you don't have it. 
At the VERY LEAST, albeit costly, it is spend on the consideration and interest of SINGAPORE... and not like some high paying salary that goes into someone's pockets and that probably contribute NOTHING to Singapore as a whole.

Me remembered when me was serving my NS, we were taught that we will never be the aggressor and why we were trained in such a manner according to various doctrines is because we would want any aggressors that have the thoughts of attacking Singapore to pay a hefty price, even SAF knows we will lose any war...

But true again. Singapore will never win a long term war. That is why, politically, they have to be two face and friendly with everyone.

You know the danger of blurring the civilian and soldier role? The enemy will not hesitate to shoot anyone, because there is no telling who is a solider and who is not. -

WEll, since the government is spending so much on the SAF, how come the soliders do not get excellent gear like their conuterparts in the USA? Much Gear that we are using now are also old or out dated. We could also make do with better personnel issued gear like boots, helmet and other stuff.

on the contrary, during the Japanese Occupation, they did dragged people out of the house - to flush out anti-Jap elements. -
Well, we certainly dun get to see or handle much high-tech weaponry during our NSF days, especially if one is still a trainee or is posted to reserve units. As a basic foot soldier, it would be hard to equip everyone with all the latest gear. Our defence expenditure is high by regional standards but still small as compared to many countries. Priority has to be given to the procurement of advanced equipment such as Apache attack helicopters, long range artillery, French designed stealth warships and new missiles ranging from anti-tank to anti-ship, amongst a host of other major equipment, both classified and unclassified. There would not be much money left for improving basic equipment after these purchases. However we certainly do not want our common soldiers to be staring down the barrels of our adversaries' tanks and warplanes with only assault rifles do we? When there is open warfare, all kinds of atrocities will be committed. Be it rape, for use as hostages or as human shields, robbery or just plain sadistic murder, u can be sure it will happen. I know how u feel, but as long as we continue to enjoy an additional day of peace u can be sure u are doing a fine job. Dun let some hostile or snide opinions get the better of u.
