I don't think it will come to civilian combatant for Singapore. In the event of a war, the 360,000 strong SAF is the sole cornerstone for our defence. To survive or be under a new oppressive regime will all depend on the SAF's performance. To break the enemy down, or nice versa, we will never know.Originally posted by Icemoon:I don't deny that.

War is too unpredictable and we have seen technologically advanced forces being crippled by seemingly weak adversaries, or surrounded and isolated forces turning the tables on a numerically superior foe. Even a wounded kitten will turn vicious when wounded and cornered, so even though I feel there is an increasing morale problem in the SAF especially with the NS forces, many will still fight valiantly to defend their loved ones, indifferent from their usual grouses and complaints about Singapore. If not for your country, at least for your parents and siblings. -

Prestige: In the Regional Defence Pact, whether ASEAN or Five Nations Defence Pact, Singapore is an equal partner. Contributing Air Force, Navy and Army, on the same level as Australia, UK, Malaysia. If we have only a PDF, with 303 rifles, the SAF would serve as runners for these nations, maybe climbing rambutans trees for Malaysians officers, and cooking for British soldiers, and cleaning the bunk of the Aussies.
Deterrent:An up-to-date Armed Forces also show that we are serious about defence, so that any future Saddam Hussein wannabe, who "only wants to take back what belongs to them" would think very carefully.
Keeping what we have: You don't own what you can't defend. Thats the rule in the old days, and it still is now. Tibet has no standing army. India respected her sovereignty, China didn't and grabbed Tibet first. Tibet didn't stand a chance against the Red Army. We have a neighbour who, believe me is waiting.
Workforce: Imagine all those regulars thrown into the employment market. The defence department employs a hell of a lot of our citizens.
Therefore, it is better to have a full Armed Forces than to have a half-past-six army. Money must be well spent. A lack lustre army is definitely a waste of money.
War is not the reason to raise an army.

There's an old latin saying, Si vis pacem para bellum, which means "If you want peace, then prepare for war" In other words, if the government followed what you suggested, then we are asking to be attacked and invaded, asking for war, you want that happen ar?

My teacher told me, when in times of war, The army will be activated and those uniform groups like NCC and NPCC will also be used like those of the German Youth. WEll, they assume the role of those anti-aircraft and all those. DUn worry, when there is a war, the government will ask for volunteers too. -

It's against international law for a country to mobilise underaged youth for war. I have read somewhere that in times of war, one of the first thing singapore will do is to disband NCC and NPCC so they will not be treated as combatants in case of capture. Btw German Youth are not intended to be use for war, their primary purpose were use to drill in Hitler's politcal doctrines so that every german is a staunch Nazi, with Nazi ideas like Hitler, more of a "brain-washed" sort of education. The boys were trained to use arms and military drills, to prepare them for military service when they become grown man. -

I noticed all the examples given here are on World War 2, but that's like donkey years ago! Policeman still wear shorts...
But in the recent years, is there any example that SAF proved it's worth? Don't talk about peacekeeping mission, humanitarian work, or street patrol for an enemy we cannot see.
Is there proof that the SAF actually keep Dr M out? Or any incident that they chase aggressor away or keep them away?
The Kris PC has been going near Pedra Branca, has the presense of the Navy kept them at bay? IMO,Perhaps not... It's just a matter of them wanting to capture Pedra Branca anot. -
so what do you think you can do asking if spending on defence a waste of money? as if you can stop the spending? go out and do it lah stop the ghamen dun write here...go out and take pedra lah if you can do it we are waiting so long still never capture.

frankly i have a feeling that the kind of weapons we buy are mostly to elevate our status. nothing to do with the real defence.
Are we overspending? Its depend. If you are living in 2 room run down HDB with only a mattress and a few clothers in your home, I think a very very cheap plastic front door will be enought. But if you are a millionaire, I suggest you to invest in a damn good front door and security system.
Whether the weapons such as F16 or Apache will do any good to defense Singapore or not, it yet to be seen but at least I can sleep well at night knowing that those weapons/machines are available when we need it.
