My neighbour burn 5 times incense per day, 5 am once, 6am once, 12pm once, 6pm once, 10pm once, each time they burn, there are 15 incense stick on their altar outside the house. If such things were to be all abolished, who will still pray respects to our ancestors? Who will still remember ancestors, that's us, in the future generations. Somehow, it will be like, a big part of the history will be gone ba. -

I used to think that it's a waste of effort and money.. burning something and u nv know whether they will receive it.
But I got a different view of it after I lost a loved one. To a loved one that has left us, we just hope that he will receive our prayers and offerings so that he will lead a better life in the other world. -

I always thought Buddhists are a tolerant lot, till recent events changed my mind.
Ancestor worship is a Chinese folk practice, a Taoist practice, some may dispute. But the issue is not whether you believe it. I am not sure if the India, the birthplace of Buddhism, has such thing.
What irk me is that Buddhists had begun a campaign recently to tell people what is inherently a Chinese folk practice or Taoist ritual that it is wrong. I had even receive pamphlets on it.
It got so bad, the founder of the Taoism forum highlighted this issue, and Straits Times article on Vesak Day highlighted some strong response from the public regarding some strong evangelism of Buddhism.
Is Buddhism today become a rather intolerant faith?
