buddhismOriginally posted by browniebaobao:Do you have a religion? If Yes, what is it? If no, I hope you respect others's religions.
I used to think that it's stupid too.. burning something and u nv know whether they will receive it.
But I got a different view of it after I lost a loved one. To a loved one that has left us, we just hope that he will receive our prayers and offerings so that he will lead a better life in the other world.
NopeOriginally posted by Cenarious:ours is to pollute the environment and waste paper
same logic right
duh
i said "wrong idea" not "bad image". lrn2readOriginally posted by laurence82:Nope
From your original statement, you said it gave bad image of Buddhism. You wanna divert this into a issue of environmental pollution, dont you?
I agree with you..Originally posted by laurence82:Gee, something to add
I always thought Buddhists are a tolerant lot, till recent events changed my mind.
Ancestor worship is a Chinese folk practice, a Taoist practice, some may dispute. But the issue is not whether you believe it. I am not sure if the India, the birthplace of Buddhism, has such thing.
What irk me is that Buddhists had begun a campaign recently to tell people what is inherently a Chinese folk practice or Taoist ritual that it is wrong. I had even receive pamphlets on it.
It got so bad, the founder of the Taoism forum highlighted this issue, and Straits Times article on Vesak Day highlighted some strong response from the public regarding some strong evangelism of Buddhism.
Is Buddhism today become a rather intolerant faith?
Ok my badOriginally posted by Cenarious:i said "wrong idea" not "bad image". lrn2read
many ppl who do this will claim to be buddhist and they dont even know what the diff btwn buddhism and taoismOriginally posted by laurence82:Ok my bad
So why would a Taoist/folk practice and rituals give wrong idea about Buddhism?
its like saying, Islam gave wrong idea about Christianity
Duh![]()
Xin zhong you guiOriginally posted by Cenarious:not intolerant but just to make it clear that buddhism is not associated with this kinda things
some kid out there commit a crime and he says u r his mastermind would u keep quiet?
then it's the person's fault wor..Originally posted by Cenarious:many ppl who do this will claim to be buddhist and they dont even know what the diff btwn buddhism and taoism
and this isnt taoism either just chinese superstition and environment polluting stupidity
yes there is a need because many ppl dont know the diff and by keeping quiet ppl will think buddhism is like this then they dun like buddhismOriginally posted by laurence82:Xin zhong you gui
Is there a need to point out everytime somebody mention ancestor worship? We are discussing burning of offerings, and i am sure the title or topicstarter didnt go 'Oh look, Buddhists are doing this again!'
No one is saying Buddhism is the 'mastermind', so why the anxiety?![]()
So all in all, this is an internal problem within Buddhists.Originally posted by Cenarious:many ppl who do this will claim to be buddhist and they dont even know what the diff btwn buddhism and taoism

yeah so by pointing out facts those ignorant ppl will learnOriginally posted by browniebaobao:then it's the person's fault wor..

So adversely, you had condemn a religious practice. Is this the way of the Buddhists?Originally posted by Cenarious:yes there is a need because many ppl dont know the diff and by keeping quiet ppl will think buddhism is like this then they dun like buddhism
there will be some noobs that claim to be buddhists when all they do it burn joss sticks and ask for fortune. theyr not really buddhists and this kinda ppl need to learn.Originally posted by laurence82:So all in all, this is an internal problem within Buddhists.

Plus again, nobody is mentioning about Buddhism. So what is the 'misconception' here?
What are they then? Buddhist-Taoist hybrids? Semi-Taoist with a tinge of Buddhist?Originally posted by Cenarious:there will be some noobs that claim to be buddhists when all they do it burn joss sticks and ask for fortune. theyr not really buddhists and this kinda ppl need to learn.
sorry, i added onto my points, not edit itOriginally posted by Cenarious:i see u r aware of ur own anger and editted ur message.

It's part of our heritage if you will, a piece of our history that is passed down from previous generations.
We all have our ways of remembering those who have passed on, why condemn others just because they are different?
