lets face it. its a practical world out there. if i am the salesman, i saw chio bu in shop, i will give her good svc what, bcos like that i can tok longer with her, bio her longer, smell her perfume, etc etc. vice versa for guys & salesgirls - this is normal human tendancy.
TS : are there ang mohs behind you that gets urshered to the front ahead of you? I once read somewhere on why sales staff prefer to treat ang moh with better - the reason given is becos they are more pleasant - they would greet the sales staff like "Hi, how u doing" and put their requests politely "Can i please have...." etc. whereas locals are often curt & rude. I don't know man, cos I am sometimes like that, maybe its our way of doing this here.
But reading your account, I am equally crossed as you do and if i was in the same shoes as you, I would probably reacted in similar fashion as I don't believe in treating someone differently just because of his dressing. Hell, there isn't dress code for that place in the beginning. Its not as if I am shopping in Ferragamo outlet or something.
Creative @ PS is it ? Hmmm, I will go and try....and I will dress shabbily, shorts, slippers and t-shirt. I will also be unshaven and hair ruffled. Lets see if they screwed up again - 50% disount on a MP3 player, I'll take anytime hee.

There was once my dad's friend was being looked down cuz he was dressed sloppily too. Think the store didnt want to accept his credit card. That pissed him off enough to throw a stack of 50 dollar notes and the cashier and shout "LIM PEH UHH LUI!!"
And that guy won some businessmen of the year award last year or something. -

in singapore, the way you dress will get you respect even if your bank account is zero. But I know most rich people (except for some) tend to dress down or not attract too much attention... actually these are the ones who are loaded. I don't like to shop in Singapore because I cannot be bothered to dress up - so I get poor service and I am used to it. Singapore and Good service are 2 things that I don't hear in a sentence even from foreigners. The GEMS thing is just a big pile of bull-crap.
same thing happen to my dad. He likes his shabby t-shirts and he was denied service, he also threw a pile of notes on the counter. He's not rich but we all ask for basic service only. In Singapore basic service is hard to come by. Good service is rare. Execellent service is none existant.
I like to shop in M'sia, US, even China and Taiwan... I don't dress up but still the people there are way nicer. The only exception is when you encounter another chinese in US where they will snub you because they think they are better being an ABC. -

I work in the sales line and treat everyone the same, regardless of their dressing. Likewise, I haven't encountered any service ppl treating me differently cuz of my dressing. Of course if the place demands a certain dress code and I choose to be different, then its right of them to treat me a certain way (I think). but that's not the point here.

I dont remember being treated so bad, but....I sometimes like to dress shabbily so I can be low profile. You know like army people wear army camoflage to blend in with the trees and become unnoticable.
It's good....I can walk around without getting stopped.....can enter a shop without salespeople approaching me.....it has its advantages.
Anyway, a handsome shuai-ge like me only need to look up and smile a little. Haii.....tough being a shuai-ge......if I dress sharp.....all the salesgirls will ask me 'can I help you' etc haii......
okok.....I go now...dont flame me. -

maybe that day was a bad day for u and the cashier. izit u got show some attitude thats why kana treated like that?? i believe now in spore, very unlikely to be treated unfairly base on dressing, but more on attitude.
