I don't hate STOMP, or think that it sucks, since it is just another forum like sgforums, and let people express their views and ideas.
HOWEVER, what I am turned off about is the concept of CITIZEN JOURNALISM, that is somehow magnified ever since STOMP appeared. As a budding journalist myself who is currently studying Mass Comms, it is my opinion that some people have taken that phrase to a whole new level. The shaming of people by taking their photos, and then posting it there, and talk about their "shameless" deeds. But however, pls note that quite often, there is no 2 sides of the story. What we see and hear there is just from the Pic and the words of the person who take the picture. The poor bugger do not have the chance to defend themselves, and in the process suffered ridicule. Ethically, this is not right and I am amazed that The Straits Times, at times take this forum so seriously that some pages can often be devoted to talk about the topics from STOMP.
True, journalists cannot always be at a spot at a particular time, and that's where the common citizen come in and inform about interesting things that is happening. This I can accept, but definitely not those tat proclaim are for discussion and yet is in fact an blatant excuse to let people criticise them. In the end, we are an Asian society, no matter how "open" we think we are, and face is still something tat Asians value.
In short, do not do to others what you don't want to happen to urself. -
