Just come to my neighbourhood in Ang Mo Kio and loiter around, you will be bound to find some smoking or drinking, blatantly in their school uniforms.

Well I could be wrong...it has been a while since I've been in a local school. There certainly is stuff like that going on but I still don't think it's nearly as much as other countries. Well, apparently, your fair number of years is not enough for you to have seen the world of Singapore teenagers. Anyway, you are drawing conclusions based on your observations only. I have worked with enough teenagers to tell you that while they don't get involved with drugs or firearms (for that matteR), it has got to do with the strict laws and the social climate here. There are many other issues which would have happened less frequently in the western culture (e.g. Australia) but are happening here.
When you do a comparison, you need to compare apples with apples, oranges with oranges. Cannot compare apples with oranges. You must understand that our gahmen taught us that, and I am sure Singapore teenagers are aware of that also... that's why you observed them to be so relatively well-behaved... -
The goody-two-shoes you've been mixing could be fearing the consequences of getting caught, or they are aware of the harm they might be causing themselves, or they have their own principles about such things.

But I'm not drawing conclusions based solely on my observations. I have spoken with many locals and numerous relatives who teach at schools here and counselors as well and what all of them have told me is that the only 13-16 year olds who smoke go to those, forgive me for being blatant, crap schools and you wouldn't find those kind of kids in the better, private schools. The better schools has students from more well to do families who are able to provide tuition & home support so that they are less likely to become delliquents -

i would actually conclude the reason for our government's fast reaction..teens who are found smoking under legal age either get serious punishment from own family members else the police force. so that might be one of the main reasons y u dun see MANY "so-called" teens smoking out there..at times i find it surprising when u came upon a 13 yr-old guy who look like 21..so yaa..many factors misleading ur observations..and of cos..ur closest peers in terms of ur seniors/elders will definately tell/show u how "green" looks singaporeans have.

Nah.. it's just that our society refuses to discuss, or admit, the severity of such problems.. If u've been in a good school all the way, the chances of you witnessing these problems is very slim. This is because our society is still highly separated by class and race despite what we claim.. and we like to keep up a certain image.
It's very easy to hide any drug / alcohol usage if u know what u're doing. Drugs and teen alcohol consumption are very common in Singapore, much more than the govt would care to admit.
In Singapore, all we do is label the whole deal to the point of superstition. You really have to go all out to find alternate information before u can get the whole picture. -
