  It's quite interesting what... I mean after 3 years of education from a tertiary institute, it's just nice to end it with a formal ceremony with scholarly gowns... Those who dont like the idea or who are too ashamed of their achievements can choose not to attend what.. It's their own choice... Uni convocation also like that... You have a choice...
  
  I think for diploma graduates, they only wear the gown right? No hat right? (actual term for the hat is called mortarboard)

  For Uni, the gowns of the various faculties are differentiated by the colour of the strips... And then the gown designs are different for Bachelor, Masters, PhD...
  
  Are the colour codes of the strips same for both NUS and NTU?
  
  As for poly, what is the gown system like? Can anyone explain? Each poly has their own gown design and colour regardless of the courses?

  Actually not completely true.
  
  IMO, poly wants to raise their status to be similar to uni.
  But I think they should raise the standard of students to match uni students first.

  Actually, I think poly is a place set up be govt for ppl to find a job.

  yeah, poly is relevant as tertiary education.
  
  poly students hold tertiary concession card;
  jc students n ite students still holding secondary concession card.
  
  so
  
  poly > jc
  
  no flamin pls cos the fact dat even in SAF, poly graduates command higher salaries than jc graduates.

  actually its useless and dumb, and a waste of money. if they want, the pple who want to wear it can wear and show off. let the rest jsut wear whatever they want, if they go that is.
  
  the only reason i went for my uni grad ceremony was for my parents. otherwise its just a ceremony/ritual, no real importance to me. i would rather display my cert than my grad photo
