I have seen a stall hanging dogs, stripped of their fur. It really put me off for a good while as I happen to be a dog-lover and used to own dogs and can never imagine any human killing man's best friend. If it helps, tou would be comforted that this was at a village (Kui Tan), about 3 hours drive from Shenzhen. In Shenzhen itself, I have not witnessed such dogmeat-selling stalls.
I have heard stories about tourists going to toilets alone and being held at knifepoint (or gunpoint). They would be brought somewhere where they will be swiftly slaughtered and their internal organs harvested. Not sure how true this is, but take it with a pinch of salt and be careful wherever you go. The human organs trade is a very big thing and China is not spared from it.
It should be safe if you stick to your group and go everywhere together. Not to worry

Shenzhen is a very modern city la, come on.
Unless you go to the more ulu ulu place away from city, then you will see ppl eat dogs. You think they open a shop beside McDonalds in the city area and sell claypot dog meat there??
They have decent shopping centers in Dong Men area, they have a very big jap restaurant call "Zhong Sen Ming Cai". Though ShenZhen is not as "Fan Rong" as Shanghai, but it is the city that is closest to HK, local shenzhen ppl are quite civilized. -

i went on a hongkong/shenzhen trip in may.
a hot t-shirt cost $6-$9 SGD there but it cost $25 SGD for the same piece of clothing. See how much the differences of importing and eating our money.
"you will never want to shop in sg again" once you shopped there.
Do becareful of snatch thieves. Always hold your hand carry or sling bag in the front. Their locals always do the same. The shopping district is very big! my one day shop there is not enough! Hongkong a bit more expensive and lesser variety.
DON'T EAT FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS in SZ. KFC SUCKS there.
They don't serve chilly sauce also, don't bother. Locals dont take spices.

TOILETS SUCKS... Those toliets in train stations sucks. like for animal sia.
"Shi jie zhi chuang" the tourist attraction not that nice. only boring miniatures and very ex.

My Initial impression was "fcuk, what is this place! i want to go back HK"
But it turned out all good after an intense shopping spree!
Lot's of grade triple A+ imitation goods there.
Plus the girls there are young/trendy and often work as sales assistance. -

Just read somewhere that in China, the eateries serve horse meat. They CUT OUT FLESH FROM A LIVE (read:breathing,alive) HORSE ann rub salt from its wounds to make it tastier!

It is difficult to bring people to interesting , unique places, without the risk of offending some people's sensibilities. You could just tell the guide that you are not interesting in seeing / eating the particular thing, and you can wait somewhere else for the others.

try not to go to muslim area. xin jiang ppl like to eat dogs only but it is only like 1 out of 1000 stalls in rural district of shenzhen.
shenzhen is divided to 2 part. city and rural. in city you get nice but expensive restaurant food it price from 200 to 500 RMB per table and it is for 4 - 8 person.
you must enjoy food there because Hong Kong food is like Singapore food. Shenzhen food has variety because there is ppl from Guang Dong, Fu Jian, He Nan and other provincial cruise. you get to choose and select.
xin jiang more to muslim style.
