Hougang was an independent state from 1959 till 1989 when SAF troops reoccupied the area then known as Punggol heights that were being occupied by separatist WP forces. According to historians, the then leader of hougang, Tan Ah Sung, insisted that every Hougangese fight to their last breath.
Unfortunately, the encroaching PAP forces tricked everyone with the promise of lift upgrading and facelifts..

...and what's left of WP forces is the area held by LTK and the latter has formed an alliance with SDA's Chiam Potong Pasir whlist isloating SDP's chee who has no home territory , resulting in his nomadic life and occasionally prison life. Not wanting to give up the fight Chee has recruited and train 'insurgents'. Due to SDP's fund being wiped out, they had no money, so they go low budget, therefore the insurgent's are given two choices: either a "tin of petrol and one match stick" or "one bottle of 7up filled with thinner with lighter" to choose as their weapon.![]()

Originally posted by ditzy:Kovan mrt area where there are currently all the condo developments going on up to simon road, used to be very old shop houses which were gutted by a big fire in the 80s, and never rebuilt.
The big longkang that snakes along old tampines road and goes underground at simon road used to be open, and a five foot way very lok kok hawker centre use to occupy the area along simon road. There used to be orh lua, wanton mee, and hokkien mee. The hokkien mee has relocated to a corner shop at the old airport road hawker centre.
The macdonald's branch along hougang st 21 is close to 25 years old, along with the mee siam, yong tau fu, carrot cake, sugarcane, and coffeeshop stalls nearest mac's. Special mention goes to the wanton mee facing the old interchange, they still use ketchup.
Was the fire that burnt down all the shophouses an accident? Or on purpose... Anybody heard that last time when they wanted to get people to move into HDB flats, they would "accidentally" burn down some kampongs to chase people out? but they did make sure no one was inside there before they burnt it down haha ![]()
Hougang was an independent state from 1959 till 1989??? wow...1989 somemore.

Hougang from what i knw means back harbour in teochew. When singapore was still under william farquhar, the teochews were arranged to settle in hougang for peace and harmony's sake. Cantonese were allocated chinatown. Not too sure about hakkas etc.
Anyone who has stayed hougang long time before? You're most prob teochew.

You're right. Especially those under the Hougang constituency now, aka the area under the control by Mr Low Thia Kiang (don't know if i got the spelling right).
there used to be some kind of Prison along Serangoon North ave 4 500+ blks ( opp the girls home) before the mid 1990s. I know cos my ex used to stay there. Now its not there.
They have destroyed the prison and it has become HDB blocks.
The other side (going to io chu kang ) where the 159 bus goes was a farm and some forest. I think now its an industrial estate ,sheng Shiong and some company buildings
