No choice, to the people of Singapore, english is an alien language.
Malay, javanese, tamil, mandarin, hokkien, cantonese, hainese, foochow, hakka dialect, these are the native and natural language of Singaporeans.
English is not the natural language of Singaporeans people.
It is an alien language imposed by colonial masters to subjugate locals to their will.

lol we also cant even speak and write properly in our mother tongue, let alone english. I got my former school mates who hated chinese and is so bad in the language that they failed their chinese tests and exams every year. Jim Rogers 5 year old daughter can speak chinese so fluently really put them to shame.

I think too much focus on maths science already. Should change that.
i have no problems with her english, because seriously,
i) how many of those singaporeans who criticise her can speak good english?
ii) on the Miss Universe stage with tens of millions or more of people watching you, the pressure is there. I'm sure in normal situation, she can speak well. Must be due to butterflies in the stomach at that moment.
iii) speaking her kind of english standard is WAY better than BANANAS, white-washed idiots and ang-moh wannabes, like most of our local channel 5 actresses and english radio stations.....neither there nor here.
HOWEVER, the only problem i have with our choice of Miss Singapore......is that we always send average-looking girls to represent us, which is a letdown.
i've seen way prettier chicks than the F1 grid girls (btw, they're not that pretty), but the thing is these pretty chicks always don't wanna apply for Miss Singapore / Universe.
i propose that in the next Miss Universe competition (2010), we either send a lady who looks like the one below, or don't participate at all :

or we can buy foreign talent into SG and get them to represent SG as well (like our table tennis players).
i don't mind.
Originally posted by cupcakelove:I guess the main gripe is that she will be representing Singapore and yet her English is not very understandable by many, therefore she is receiving so much criticism and flak. Some even wonder how did she win when she cannot even speak English, an international languag, well. If she steps out on the stage in front of an international audience, they might just assume that everyone in Singapore speaks poor English and cannot pronounce properly. It's just the same as how many ppl think that Singapore is a part of China.
But if she were just some pedestrian who was being interviewed, i guess not many ppl would give a hoot to this. Afterall, many people we know do still speak like this.
I second this. ~_~ Embarrassing shyt.

That is why it is important to speak native language, not alien language.
Which other Miss speaks alien language during contest?

you've gotta be kidding, right?
Even the chairman of the Speak Good English campaign has publicly on the record said that her English is just like that of half, or more than half, of Singapore population's English.
I like this person, the chairman, he has a good heart and a good understanding of the overall situation.
He deserves to be a Speak Good English chairman, because he is not stuck up, not like some people who criticize Miss World Singapore and display an embarassing classism attitude.
In my humble and honest opinion, people who display classism, are actually insecure people who have issues, and they are the ones who are low-class and childish themselves.
Think about what I said.

is not about the English is the way she express herself her choice of word ...and worst of all childish demeanor.
The rest is just to drop her Lah and the Hur
I feel that her english was deemed bad, not because of the accent, more so due to the fact that she was unable to express herself clearly. She kept going "yah....yah...yayapapaya..". I mean, theres absolutely nothing wrong with speaking english with an accent. Germans/French/Americans/Brits/Aussies all speak it differently. Why can't we?
I don't really expect her to speak with the angmo-ish accents, but at least make the conversation more smooth flowing...But all the colloquial terms being used in such a competition is just inappropriate!
It is all in the mind, not the mouth/vocal cords. ![]()

Then that half had better work harder.
Criticism is a good thing - it gives you ground to work on weaknesses pointed out.
But flaming/trolling the person is just wrong - I've seen my fair share of that, calling her names etc.
Come to think about it...if more than half of Singapore's population speaks like that..We are in deep shit. ![]()

Lol, It isn't really most Sg'reans fault they can't speak proper English, but why send someone that can't speak correctly for a universal contest when there are OTHERS in SG that can speak better. (Probably looks better too). =\
