agreed, pretty much no point being too cautious about your language if your not in the media's target or in an international meeting

That is Lee Kuan Yew's fucking propaganda.
Chinese people in malaya from older generation know how to speak simple malay.
He was the one who messed up all the languages and turned Singaporeans into rojak speakers.
That fucking anglo bastard.

What about work? Do you think singlish is good enough for communication at work?

So what if the older generation can speak Malay? That did not prevent the racial riots in the 1960s.
Wind back the clock 44 years. We were then a newly independent country with high unemployment and an impoverished population which was divided along racial lines. Could the government realistically adopt Malay, Mandarin or Tamil as our first language without upsetting the other “marginalised” ethnic groups?
Or should we be more pragmatic and accept English as our first language so as to allow our population to partake in the global economy, which was then (unfortunately) dominated by the West?
Before you start accusing me of being a “PAP dog” or a “LKY crony”, let me stress that I am NOT a PAP supporter. I support pragmatic, clean and competent governance - be it PAP, SDP, WP or any other party.
Speaking English to people who only understand English is natural. Hence, no one will mix Singlish with English when speaking to them. It should be fine among friends and fellow Singaporean to chat in Singlish as it is easily accepted and understood. Singlish is a naturally 'brewed' langauage in Singapore due to our daily conversations with Chinese Hokkien people and our Malay counterparts. It is mostly consisted of Hokkien and Malay phrases.
The problem is with the education system, not the teachers.
When you teach a child two languages at the same formative period, you will get rubbish.
The problem is with the useless fucking PAP system.

He is not talking about the "English vs Malay vs Mandarin vs Hokkien" issue now. He is now changing subject and finding issue with the bilingual policy. It seemed that I have finally convinced him that English is indeed the right choice for our first language.

Seriously lah you dont know anything about language aquisition (how do you spell this word?)and how a child learns you are not even a trained teacher so dont just condemn everything for the sake of it.You want to condemn PAP I have new one for you.......It is said that they are going to open over 40 new private pre-school all over Singapore at a slightly lower fee. This means that those in this business are going to have a new big competitor 'THE GARMEN'.Lower fee to kill people and up fee when they are the only one standing? Well,we dont have to be fortune tellers to know the answer already.
Sorry forgot to say that 'the slightly lower fee' is $200 less

And neither do millions of children worldwide whose first language is not English.

Simple fact.Children are able to absorb everything they hear and learn multiple languages simultaneously.

Exactly.
You just hit on the origins of Singlish.
Filipinos are the best in speaking the English language in Asia, why not hire Filipino english teachers to teach the proper english language in Singapore?

I was referring to angel/Poh Ah Pak's post at 11.14am.
In my humble opinion, it is possible to increase Singaporeans' English fluency level. But to do this, several steps are needed:
1. First, the curriculum must be changed to incorporate Singlish awareness and avoidance.
2. Second, the teachers must be specially trained to impart bilingual capability. They must be equipped with a bilingual skill. And there must be a special lesson on bilingualism. So no more English lesson, mother tongue lesson, done separately. There must be a special teaching on how to be bilingual.
3. Third, the media must make up its mind and follow the major sources of the languages concerned. For English, I propose to follow American English standard, and the others, as accordingly. No more local standards. Otherwise, the localized English standard cannot stand a chance and cannot escape from being bastardized.
Thanks.
we should be proud of singlish
you think americans like british english and vice versa meh
