arent you too affected by the influx of foreigners?
if and when you see a PRC converse with them in chinese or a common dialect.
thats what i do. i dont speak to them in english coz i think its ridiculous for 2 non-english people of the same race to speak in english. we are not angmos. why use other people's language when you have your own.
wow. most of the comments i see are very negative towards immigrants. I really don't understand, being served by a foreign waitress has affected you how? Don't forget that foreign labour are cheaper and some industries are shunned by locals, hence they reduce the costs of production and the costs of goods and services. Also, you should know how difficult it is to learn a whole new language in a matter of months, and it really isn't their fault that the have a certain accent when they speak-- it is something very hard to change for them. If you are complaining about being served jap food by a pinoy waitress, well this is globalisation. in an alternate universe without it, you may also be complaining about lack of cultural diversity.
Lastly, I feel that towards immigration we need to be more open and tolerant, not be discriminatory. they are fellow human beings and many of us at one point in our lives become immigrants in another country, be it for a period of study or work.

FT Waitress: 是三
Me: (Ok wtf) 好的。(And I went in)
No prizes for guessing which country. Wah now come back for holiday, really feel that this place is getting more and more foreign.
I am not siding with the PRC girl, but I think this is more of an misperception case.
The PRC did not say the wrong thing, rather TS perceived wrongly what she said.

Ok, let's wait till they take your job because they are cheaper and then I will gloat and bawl that your industry is "shunned by locals". ![]()

Well, she said "three ken (kinds of) chicken". What other way could that have been interpreted? lol
On a micro scale, that's negligible. On a macro scale, it's a sign of what gives rise to our societal tension these days.
Anyway, u've got a better eg? lol. At least the wan tan mee would normally have been pronounced with the correct diction, even for the hawker.
And i don't give a shit to what globalisation fuck or what theory. A society has to have its own core of citizens and that's that. Imagine Singaporeans flooding China (that is if we have the bloody population) and we speak so much English and Singlish there. You think the locals would entertain us? I wouldn't want that to happen as much as any true blue mainland Chinese because they have 5000 years of history and the core of that beautiful and ancient society should be born and bred mainland Chinese.
So called "jobs shunned by locals" is a myth perpetrated by the state controlled media. That part is absolutely evitable.

She was recommending fish, most probably three kinds of fish, which you misunderstood as chicken and later raw fishes.
Conversation such as your I also encounter, but it is just laughed off. And there pleasentries all around.
I gather your beef is the influx of foreigners, and you are using this incident to vent it.

Your comments clearly show how shallow your mindset is.
Don't forget Singapore has Malays and Indians.
So what now?
If your theory is "why use other people's language when you have your own." so the Indians and Malays are going to use Tamils and Melayu to converse with someone who speaks Chinese?
Fucking make no sense at all.
Use your brains before you comment.
This world doesn't revolves around PRC.
I think it is right for people to vent their displeasure on foreigner, after all, many would not want a stranger in their house. Even as a taiwanese, sometime I am not welcome here, cos my hokkien sound like Xiamen type, ending up misinterpret as PRC gal, couple with my white complex, not much left to hide.
But singaporeans, as an educated lots, should be much expose to a global conception than merely a narrow view on races. For once, I also heard of singaporean getting racial remarks in Oz and USA, some people there look down on Singaporean, and make it difficult of singapore immigrant to work there.
Let us take a recourse into future, by 50 years time, I have a feeling that singaporean may end up having to migrate to china or part of china to find job. And let say, you end up having to serve the then well to do chinese at a resturant with chinese foods, and you speak broken mandarin to them, what will happens, mind me, there are billions of them there

Well, it would help you if you stop making half-baked assumptions just like you did in the thread about marriage and boys school. Also, have you ever touched on the term "societal tension" in school or researched about it? My guess is no because your take on these matters is very superficial.

Its natural for people to vent their displeasure on what ever they are displeased about. Somebody surely will have something to complain about, here or anywhere in the world.
I think in 50 years time, Singapore citizens will be 6 million. Four million on this island (plus 2million FT and FW, maximum six million people here), two million citizens overseas all over the place. Like the Chinese and Indian race, everywhere also have.
At that time, can have people don't know speak what language, but can sing Majula Singapura in Malay, or something sound like Malay.![]()
I think i seriously to migrate one day. Sg is way to noisy for me.
Like what i told hitman before, i am an introvert.

Yes I am very affected. The contrast is especially greater when one has not been in sg for some time. I just hope that this place is still recognisable if I ever come back here to retire. I do agree with you that Chinese should speak Chinese but I'd have no qualms speaking English to another China Chinese if he or she is comfortable.
imagine one day if such like chicken sashimi exist ![]()

Ammm, did you say something about taking things less seriously in another thread?
Maybe its not you, but you would have read it. Chill man.
If things are strange but true, anecdotal, what does it matter if it is also superficial.

That one where the forumite got banned and how it affects her entire life? haha of course we shouldn't take that seriously. But now we are discussing a national issue.
The national issue is the numbers of foreigners. Not the foreigners per se.
What happened to you could happen even if the number of foreigners let in is miniscule.
If fact such language faux pas could happen even if the waitress is a Singaporean girl speaking in Singlish.

soon, singaporeans won't be the majority....
and we will be singing "we are the 1%"

do i have to spell everything out for you?
if a chinese and a malay were to converse of course they'll speak english because thats the only common language both knows. unless you have a malay speaking chinese or a chinese speaking malay involved. the same logic applies for indians. or do i have to type it all out so your tiny brain can understand?
speaking chinese means the world revolves around PRCs? are you saying your world revolves around the angmos since you speak english?
the fact you are so biased show just how shallow your mindset is. yet you have the cheek to say that to me.
use your brains before you start insulting people.
btw if you have any sense you would have known from my reply to the TS that i am assuming he is a chinese. which i am quite sure he is.

Oh now you're comapring this faux paus to Singlish hahaha. I don't think you come from my generation and we are on different frequencies here. So to each his own.
