Are most of Chinese here in Singapore weak in mandarin?

we see some professors of chinese language in singapore bad in pronunciation but superb writers...
very rare u find them speak as fluent and precise than those in PRC dramas....
surely and naturally Guo Liang is good....

Saw some mention of someone getting A1 for higher chinese. Good job but I can tell you it's something very academic. Put any scholar in with a decent interest in mandarin and he will get that kind of score. The key here is.....can you speak the language proficiently? Peppered with idioms and chinese culture / history. Even if one can, the local environment does not support it. That's why the standard of Singapore mandarin can only hover around mediocre levels. Doesn't help that mediacock comes up with half-fuck shows with half-fuck mandarin mixed with English. And the vocab used is mediocre to boot.
If you really wanna improve your level of mandarin and do the 5000 years of language history some justice, you have to move to China. Well, don't get me wrong, not to proudly champion the heritage of this northern dialect but it is in many ways linked to other dialects of China too. Cheers.

Why do we need to be good in chinese?
We are Singaporeans.
We are not PRC.
If you look at yourself at "I am a Singaporean Chinese" first, i have no comments.
But i look myself as "I am a Singaporean" 1st then my race.

The very same can be asked of English. Why? And race matters, if you pick a wife of another race, will your parents mind? Do you mind? Or is that everyone is a Singaporean.

I look down on chinese ppl who cannot speak proper mandarin....u think u go european countries even with fluent english the ang mos will still spit at ur face...u are no better then a banana..yellow outside white inside....so pls la....if ur chinese make sure u can speak at least proper mandarin....no matter wat u are going to be yellow unless u go buy urself a bottle of bleach to try n bleach urself white la....

My Chinese is really weak, and I'm not proud of it. Chinese is a beautiful language..but I've never learnt to embrace it, although I've had tuition for this subject for years. =) But one thing about chinese is that it can be studied. English cannot be, because of the type of exams (two comprehensive passages + essays in my time) whereas for chinese you get stuff like zao ju, ci yu tian kong and all that..can study one larh! I can write (a bit) Chinese OK but can't speak well. :S

I don't think Singapore can develop into a proper state and develop nationalism or national culture or strong identity under an alien and colonial language such as english.
English is the cancer of Singapore nationalism and culture and must be destroyed.
We are still mentally shackled to colonialism through the alien language.
We cannot follow Lee Kuan Yew's way. His way is a rojak and garbage way of forming a state due to his inability to choose whether he is peranakan/british ang moh/ fake chinese identity.
Follow a person like Lee Kuan Yew on culture and language is ludicrous and insane.

ya, the japanses are proud of their languages, the korean, the thai, even the malaysia boleh are proud of their national language, but singapore, not a true identity of languages, all rojaked, even if speak english, also yellow banana type

He himself has serious problems on his own identity.

I can speak mandarin but cannot write chinese character, maybe my name and other simple elementary stuffs.
But with the help of hanyupinyin, i'm able to write a lot more better.

I once went on an overseas tour with a group of SG friends to UK. An Ang Moh friend noticed two of my female SG chinese friends speaking to each other in English all the time. He ask them, whether they speak their mother tongue at home. They say no, they only know how to speak english. I feel embarassed.

It cannot be the dominant language.
We have our own local languages like other countries that can be used as dominant language. There is no need to use alien and colonial language as dominant language.
